Everything we know about the new gaming GPUs

Leaks are heating up about Nvidia’s new No. 2 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Its specs and performance are rumored to feature several improvements over the current RTX 4080, but they won’t make a huge difference. After the disastrous launch of the GeForce RTX 4080, in which one of the cards ended up being «unlaunched» and the resulting card was ridiculously expensive, we’re hoping Nvidia learns some lessons for this GPU’s successor.

While the RTX 5090 looks set to be the flagship in Nvidia’s new Blackwell lineup of gaming GPUs, and will likely take home the Best Graphics Card medal, the RTX 5080 should be significantly cheaper. Plus, while Nvidia misjudged the pricing of the original RTX 4080, it (almost) got it back when it launched the cheaper, faster RTX 4080 Super in early 2024 for $999.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 specs estimate

The latest Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 specs rumor states that the new GPU will be about half the power of the RTX 5090, with only 10,752 CUDA cores and 16GB of GDDR7 VRAM.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
graphics processor GB203-400-A1
CUDA color 10,752
Short message 84
RT core 84
interface 16 PCIe 5.0
Video memory 16GB/24GB 32Gbps GDDR7
memory interface 256 bit
memory bandwidth 1,024GB/sec
Power consumption 400W
power connector 1 x 16 pin

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 will be built on the new architecture, using one of the company’s new Blackwell RTX 50 GPU designs. While the RTX 5090 was rumored to use a large new chip codenamed GB202, the latest RTX 5080 leaks claim the new graphics card will use a smaller chip codenamed GB203.

It’s likely that the chip will also be used in other GPUs in Nvidia’s stack, such as the RTX 5070 Ti, where parts of the GPU are disabled, but the RTX 5080 is rumored to use a variant codenamed GB203-400-A1.

According to the latest rumors from tech leaker kopite7kimi, the RTX 5080 CUDA core count will reach 10,750, spread across Nvidia’s 84 streaming multiprocessor (SM) units. Assuming Nvidia sticks with a similar block design to its current Ada Lovelace GPUs, where each SM has one RT core, this setup will also give you 84 RT cores.

These numbers are similar to the 10,240 CUDA cores and 80 SMs in the current RTX 4080 Super, but well below the RTX 5090’s rumored numbers. The flagship GPU is rumored to have 21,760 CUDA cores, which is much lower than the RTX 5090’s rumored number. That’s double the RTX 5080’s rumored 10,750.

Likewise, according to some leaks, the RTX 5080 ships with 16GB of GDDR7 memory at launch, and while that’s faster than the GDDR6X VRAM used in the RTX 4080, the amount remains the same. However, another recent leak claims that a 24GB RTX 5080 will launch later, giving the card more headroom to run high-resolution games with tons of detail.

What’s more, the 24GB card is rumored to feature the same core GPU specs as the 16GB card, a feat now technically possible thanks to the just-released Samsung 24Gb GDDR7 chip. The chip has a 3GB capacity in the same package size as the 2GB chip, meaning it can directly replace a 16GB card.

But sadly, it looks like the memory interface will be the same 256-bit width as the RTX 4080, which would be disappointing if this ends up being an expensive GPU. If the RTX 5090 does have a 512-bit port, then the RTX 5080 should at least have a 320-bit port.

On the plus side, using GDDR7 VRAM should provide more bandwidth. What’s more, the latest leak points to the RTX 5080 VRAM running at a blazingly fast 32Gbps, which will help negate the narrow bus. If this leak is true, it would mean that the RTX 5080 has a memory bandwidth of 1,024GB/s, which is even faster than the RTX 4090’s 1,008GB/s bandwidth.

Finally, the RTX 5080 is rumored to consume 400W, meaning it only requires a 16-pin power connector. Some speculation claims the RTX 5090 requires two power connectors, and while that’s already unlikely, especially with a Founders Edition card running at stock speeds, it’s unlikely if the RTX 5080 consumes 400W of power.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 guide: kopite7kimi says 5080 launches before 5090

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 release date expected

Based on rumors and speculation, our best estimate for the RTX 5080 release date window is January 2025, as Nvidia has yet to officially announce a date.

Historically, 80-series GPUs were the first to launch, with the RTX 1080, 2080, and 3080 all launching before more expensive cards. However, Nvidia threw us into trouble by launching the RTX 4090 before the 4080 in 2022, and rumors suggest Nvidia may do it again with its new Blackwell series.

However, reports here have been mixed. Early leaks pointed to the RTX 5090 launching in 2024 and being the only GPU in the new series to do so. However, tech leaker kopite7kimi later claimed that the RTX 5080 would be released first, with the RTX 5090 following.

The leaker now says that no new RTX 5000 series Blackwell GPUs are expected in 2024, with the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 expected to launch in January 2025, possibly at the CES trade show.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 price estimate

Based on the current price of the RTX 4080 Super, our best estimate for the RTX 5090 price is $999, which is significantly cheaper than the RTX 4080 when it originally launched.

We really hope Nvidia learns from the price of the original RTX 4080. At $1,199, it’s only $400 cheaper than the RTX 4090, but significantly less powerful. What’s more, its predecessor, the RTX 3080, had an MSRP of just $699, although subsequent GPU shortages meant it was virtually impossible to buy one at that price.

Sadly, we don’t think we’ll see the days of $699 80-series GPUs again, at least unless AMD or Intel steps up and offers some serious competition, but we don’t think Nvidia is going to kill itself in the competition. An 80-series GPU priced at $1,199 has been launched. $999 seems to be what people are willing to pay for this level of performance, and it’s what we expected for the RTX 5080.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 guide: New GPU faster than RTX 4090 in ray tracing, according to XpeaGPU leak

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 Benchmark Estimates

Our Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 benchmarks estimate the card to be slightly faster than the RTX 4080 Super at rasterization, but significantly faster at ray tracing.

There haven’t been many leaks about the RTX 5080’s performance yet, but there is a rumor that the RTX 5080 will have faster ray tracing than the RTX 4090. The news comes from regular tech leaker XpeaGPU, who claims that the RTX 5080’s performance, the GB203 GPU used by the RTX 5080, is rumored to be «close to the AD102 in raster and faster in RT.»

Over the past few generations, Nvidia’s new GPU architecture has improved greatly in ray tracing performance over previous generations, but to a lesser extent in non-ray tracing gaming performance (rasterization). This appears to be the case with the RTX 5080 as well.

Despite its purportedly lower specs, this leak suggests the RTX 5080 will still be faster than the RTX 4090, thanks to improvements to the Blackwell architecture. However, we won’t know for sure until we have the cards in hand to test for ourselves.

In the meantime, while we wait for the RTX 5080 to launch, you can read our complete guide to Nvidia DLSS, where we explore Nvidia’s upgrades and the power of the frame generation technology.
